Backpacking usually brings to mind long trails and solo encounters with nature. However, this summer, I discovered that adding a group of strangers to the equation can create an equally rewarding experience. Thanks to the Send It Foundation, I backpacked with 13 people along the beautiful Pacific Crest Trail. What started as just a hike turned into lifelong friendships and unforgettable memories.
Arrival in Reno
Our adventure kicked off with a flight into Reno, Nevada. I met two newcomers, Alfonso and Bec, and together we embarked on a 35-minute drive to the Send It house. Nervous excitement filled the air as we anticipated meeting the others. When we arrived, Caroline, Emily, and Ashley welcomed us warmly. These amazing staff members were pivotal in making our journey smooth and enjoyable.
As we introduced ourselves, the diverse backgrounds of my fellow participants became clear. Cam, Kelly, Laura, Mary, Taylor, and Susy—who had traveled all the way from South Africa—each had unique stories. This melting pot of experiences set the stage for deep connections we would make over the coming days.

Packing for the Journey
After introductions, we had a packing session led by Caroline. Even with my previous backpacking experience, I learned valuable tips on packing efficiently. For instance, we discovered that rolling clothes saves space and maintains organization. Each of us aimed to contribute to a common goal: to minimize our load while ensuring we had essentials for our trip. This crucial step prepared us for the beautiful challenge ahead.
The First Day: Hiking to Sand Lake
On our first hiking day, we tackled a six-mile trek to Sand Lake. The weather was nearly perfect, allowing us to reach our destination by 3 PM. Setting up our tents was more than just a chore; it felt like a rite of passage for all of us. After a quick dip in the lake, I savored my first dehydrated meal of the trip. I was fortunate to enjoy every bite, and Susy's generosity in sharing her meal made it even more satisfying.

A Night Under the Stars
That evening, we gathered around the camp fire spot (Fire Ban) to share stories, laugh, and bond over our shared experiences as cancer survivors. Each of us carried our own stories of strength, and as we exchanged tales, the connections deepened. The magic of that night made me feel a sense of belonging that I I was craving.
Day Two: The Hike to Paradise Lake
On day two, we set off for Paradise Lake. The hike provided stunning views that took our breath away. When we stumbled upon a quirky double-decker outhouse, laughter echoed through the trees. Once we reached Paradise Lake, it was clear we couldn’t resist a refreshing swim. This time, excitement surged as even Cam took the plunge, encouraging others to join in on the fun.
That night, we continued our ritual of storytelling by the fire pit (Sadly there was a fire ban) The bond we were forming felt stronger than ever, and I was thankful to be part of such a vibrant group. From Mary’s mono haircut story to Becs’s shreck rave and embraced the moment . I felt joyful and able to share my feelings about my life that few can understand “But Them”.
A Challenge by Choice
The next morning was designed as a "challenge by choice" day. With a steep nine-mile hike ahead, Cam and Mary opted for an adventurous, pack-free mile out-and-back trip, while Susy and Kelly decided to rest. The rest of us took a swift two-mile out-and-back trip to explore a stunning lake. Surrounded by nature’s beauty, the joy of being outdoors was unmistakable.
After returning to camp, we engaged in a lively game of cards, which was a great way to unwind and enjoy time together.

The Final Push
On our last morning, we woke up early to face the toughest hike of the trip—a nine-mile journey back to our starting point. There were moments when exhaustion crept in, and I questioned if I could finish. However, I was inspired by my uplifting wristbands and the energetic songs sung by fellow hikers, pushing me through those tough moments.
Finding Family in the Wilderness
Completing this journey made me realize the trip was about more than just hiking. It was about forging family-like bonds with unexpected companions. The connections, shared stories, and obstacles we tackled together solidified relationships that will last a lifetime.
Backpacking with strangers turned into an unforgettable experience filled with laughter, resilience, and heartfelt friendships. I returned home with not only stunning memories of picturesque landscapes but also a deeper appreciation for the remarkable people I shared this journey with.
If you ever have the chance to join a similar adventure, seize it. You never know who you'll meet or what you will learn about yourself along the way.
